Spaces

The Centre for Creative AI comprises three interconnected spaces, designed to support the full arc of creative work with AI: from experimentation through production to presentation.

Creative AI Lab

Four people sit at computer workstations in a bright, open room.

At the heart of the Centre is the Creative AI Lab: six high-performance workstations that run open-source AI models locally and provide access to commercial platforms. Beyond using existing models, the lab enables students and researchers to fine-tune open-source models on their own datasets for creative and research applications.

By hosting these capabilities on Birkbeck's own hardware, the Centre provides a secure and flexible environment in which AI systems can be explored, adapted and interrogated directly, rather than only through commercial cloud platforms and proprietary interfaces.

Main Studio

A person holds a video camera, which points at two other people sitting at a table, against a background of booths. The video camera's viewfinder is focusing on one of those people.

The Centre's main presentation, teaching and production space features a wall-sized, high-resolution LED screen alongside professional camera, lighting and audio equipment. It supports virtual production and filming, high-impact presentations, data visualisation and collaborative group workshops, with dedicated high-performance laptops enabling flexible multi-screen collaboration.

Production Studio

A soundproofed studio for audio and video work, supporting podcast recording for up to four participants, voiceover, and video editing and post-production, built around professional recording and editing equipment.

Staff and students can also use Birkbeck's Immersive Learning Centre whose digital production equipment, facilities and loan services complement the CCAI for projects that move between XR and creative AI spaces.

The CCAI also connects with the Birkbeck Creative Practice Lab in the School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication, which supports research, teaching and public engagement in the creative arts, including a cinema, gallery and theatre space for students and researchers.
