About the Centre for Creative AI

The Centre for Creative AI (CCAI) is Birkbeck's hub for critical and creative engagement with artificial intelligence.

Supported by £1.976 million in funding from the Office for Students, the Centre brings together students, researchers and creative practitioners to experiment hands-on with generative AI models and tools, while reflecting on the technology’s cultural, ethical and creative implications.

Our approach

The Centre approaches AI with neither hype nor with fear. We believe that understanding these technologies requires both hands-on experimentation and critical inquiry.

Rather than treating AI as something to be accepted or rejected, the CCAI encourages students and researchers to investigate how these systems are built, whose values they embody, what kinds of creativity they enable, and what forms of knowledge and power they reshape. Technical practice and critical reflection are therefore inseparable, with established skills in media production, storytelling and creative judgement remaining central to meaningful work with AI.

Our facilities

The Centre has three purpose-designed spaces on the ground floor of Birkbeck Central Building: the Creative AI Lab, equipped with high-performance workstations for running open-source AI models locally; the Main Studio, featuring an LED wall for virtual production, presentations and collaborative work; and the Production Studio, designed for podcasting, video and post-production.

Our purpose

The CCAI supports teaching across Birkbeck's School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication, and is open to students and researchers across the College. It also serves as a base for industry collaboration, public events, and professional upskilling in the creative and digital sectors.
