This MSc Astrobiology is a unique course that provides you with a strong theoretical foundation in the study of the distribution, history and future of life in the universe. It offers you the chance to understand the diversity of potentially habitable environments on Earth, in the solar system, the galaxy and beyond.

Why choose this course?
- It is led by experts in astrobiology, including Dr Andrew Rushby who is particularly recognised for his study of the atmospheres and climates of small, rocky planets orbiting distant stars.
- You will also be taught by scientists from the joint Birkbeck/UCL Centre for Planetary Sciences who are highly involved in astrobiology missions, such as NASA and European Space Agency (ESA) missions to Mars, the outer solar system, and the search for planets around distant stars.

How will I learn?
This course is available to study full- or part-time and follows an evening timetable.
Teaching will be delivered on campus and online through a series of lectures, seminars and tutorials. You will also take part in staff-supported, learner-driven research and directed reading which will help you to complete an independent research dissertation on a current astrobiology topic of your choice.
If you require a Student visa to study in the UK, you will only be able to apply for the on-campus study option for this course. The online option will not be available to you because it may affect the conditions of your visa.

How often will I attend classes?
Full-time: Two to three evenings a week, October to July.
Part-time: Usually one to two evenings a week, depending on your option module choice, October to July.

More highlights
- Dr Andrew Rushby leads this course, bringing to it his specialist knowledge and several years' training and experience at NASA Ames Research Center managing NASA’s Nexus for Exoplanet System Science (NExSS).
- This course is the first of its kind in England, and only the second astrobiology degree of any kind in the UK.
- The course is relatively new, yet our graduates have already represented Birkbeck on the national and international stage, presenting their research at conferences and symposia such as the NASA Astrobiology Graduate Conference 2024. Many have also been successful in applying to take part in the very competitive European Space Agency (ESA) ELGRA Gravity-Related Research Summer School.
- We share expertise, facilities and events with UCL, including through the Centre for Planetary Sciences which is one of the UK’s leading planetary and exoplanetary science centres.
- Birkbeck was rated in the top 25 universities in the UK for its Earth Systems and Environmental Science research in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework.

Course structure
You must complete modules worth a total of 180 credits, consisting of:
- three compulsory modules on campus (60 credits) or four* compulsory modules online (90 credits)
- three or four option modules on campus (60 credits) or two option modules online (30 credits)
- a 12,000-word research project (60 credits).
* Please note, the module Molecular Basis of Life is compulsory if you are studying this course fully online; it is optional if you are studying on campus.

What are the methods of teaching?
Teaching on this course is offered on campus and online through a series of lectures, a revision session and staff-supported, learner-driven research and directed reading. This will develop the skills, knowledge and experience you need to undertake a comprehensive independent research project or dissertation.

Depending on the module, assessment on this course includes examinations (on campus or online), assessed coursework and student presentations.

Entry requirements
This course is particularly relevant for recent graduates from physical scientific disciplines, such as geological, astronomical and life sciences, planning to undertake PhD-level research in astrobiology. Typically an undergraduate degree (2:2 or above) in a relevant subject is required, but individual applications will be considered on the basis of experience and merit.
Please note: students who have completed or who are enrolled on our BSc Planetary Exploration with Astronomy and Astrobiology may not find this course suitable for further study.
We welcome applicants without traditional entry qualifications as we base decisions on our own assessment of qualifications, knowledge and previous work experience. We may waive formal entry requirements based on judgement of academic potential.

What are the English language requirements?
If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests. We also accept other English language tests.

What are the visa and funding requirements?
If you are not from the UK and you do not already have residency here, you may need to apply for a visa.
The visa you apply for varies according to the length of your course:
- Courses of more than six months' duration: Student visa
- Courses of less than six months' duration: Standard Visitor visa
International students who require a Student visa should apply to study on our courses full-time as these qualify for Student visa sponsorship. If you are living in the UK on a Student visa, you will not be eligible to enrol to study part-time courses at Birkbeck (with the exception of some modules).
As a Student visa student, you should also apply to study on campus only, as online and flexible options of study (if they are available for your course) may affect the conditions of your visa.
