Our research impact

Our researchers work with individuals, communities and policymakers across the world to make a positive difference. We collaborate with organisations of all kinds - from businesses to charities to governments to NGOs - to contribute towards resolving the urgent threats facing society, to enhance social equalities and social justice and to inform policy and practice nationally and internationally and to enrich public knowledge in and across our areas of expertise.

In pursuit of those aims, the College has identified in our Research Strategy 2024-2030 five overarching themes which reflect the pressing societal issues our researchers seek to address. These themes are:

  • Digital, data, artificial intelligence
  • Enterprise, finance, leadership
  • Health, mind, well-being
  • Heritage, histories, cultures and social justice
  • Nature, environment, sustainability

Supporting our researchers

The Impact and Knowledge Exchange Team provides expert advice to Birkbeck researchers across our disciplinary portfolio at all levels and career stages. We can help you map stakeholders, build engagement activities and impact pathways into funding applications and evidence any resulting impact.

Detailed information is available to staff on our Impact and Knowledge Exchange Connect Site (internal link), where we share details about our Lunch and Learn sessions on different types of impact and have compiled the sector’s best practice resources on evaluating public engagement activities, evidencing impact and finding funding for impact and knowledge exchange.
