The Medieval Guide to Healthy Living
When:
—
Venue:
Birkbeck Clore Management Centre
We often think of medieval medicine as strange, unhygienic and unscientific, but the truth is far more complicated. Long before modern wellness trends, people in the Middle Ages were actively thinking about how to live well.
In this in-conversation event Katherine Harvey dicusses her new book The Medieval Guide to Healthy Living with Clara Rawlings. They will dive into the way medieval people followed detailed health regimens, balanced diet with exercise, considered the effects of their emotions and sought to avoid illness through environmental awareness and routine care. They will discuss the practical and surprisingly relatable ways in which medieval individuals cared for their minds and bodies. Using historical sources that echo our own wellness concerns, they will offer a new take on a misunderstood era- and argue that the Middle Ages can teach us some valuable lessons about healthy living.
Expect discussion of aromas.
