Japan in transition: the documentary cinema of Haneda Sumiko
When:
—
Venue:
Birkbeck 43 Gordon Square
This roundtable with film clips and discussion marks Japanese documentarist Haneda Sumiko's long career and 100th birthday.
Join Dr Marcos Centeno Martin, Dr Alejandra Armendáriz-Hernández, and Birkbeck's Dr Irene González-López in this exploration of the documentary cinema of Haneda Sumiko (1926-), a trailblazing woman director who documented Japan’s drastic transformations of the twentieth century through films about wide-ranging topics, such as folk culture and traditional arts, historical memory, aging society, women’s movements, and nature. We will show some extended clips and discuss what makes Haneda’s cinema special and relevant still today. After six years investigating Haneda’s work and leading a research group with scholars and curators around the world, we would like to share with you some of our findings and celebrate the publication of our new book The Documentary Cinema of Haneda Sumiko: Japan in Transition through Gender, Arts, Nature and Society (Routledge).
