30 Years of Edward Yang's Mahjong: Screening & Discussion
When:
—
Venue:
Birkbeck 43 Gordon Square
Edward Yang is one of the masters of Taiwanese cinema. This screening deliberately chooses a film other than his best known work Yi Yi, and instead selects his rarer, second-to-last work, Mahjong (1996), also celebrating its 30th anniversary. This film reflects how a rapidly modernising and urbanising Taipei dealt with issues of violence--in this vein it is still highly relevant to the era we live in nowadays.
Discuss afterwards with Carrie Poon (Newcatle University) and Michael Tsang (birkbeck). Bring your questions and thoughts on this fabulous filmmaker.
