Birkbeck Clore Management Centre
In 1981, Birkbeck received a bequest from the estate of the late Professor William Matthews for annual lectures on the English language or medieval literature. The lectures alternate between these subjects.
This year's lecture will be given by Dr Elizabeth Boyle (Maynooth University, Ireland), with the title 'Constructing Medieval Ireland after Modernism: from Thomas Kinsella to Emma Donoghue.'
Elizabeth Boyle's research focusses on the religious, cultural, and intellectual history of medieval Ireland, and Ireland's contacts with Britain and Europe. She is the author of History and Salvation in Medieval Ireland (Routledge, 2021), numerous articles and book chapters, and a bestselling volume of autobiographical essays, Fierce Appetites (Penguin Random House, 2022).
