Module description
In this module you will gain an overview of the potential impact of a range of developmental and psychological disorders and adverse experiences on children’s lives and their education. We will examine how developmental and psychological differences emerge and evolve over time, and how they interact with individual, family and sociocultural factors. We will also consider evidence-based interventions to support and/or treat, issues discussed and consider culturally sensitive and ethical approaches to working and researching with children and adolescents.

Learning objectives
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- build on concepts and theories studied in previous modules, and review psychological explanations for children’s and young people’s social, emotional and cognitive development from childhood to adolescence
- identify key (neuropsychological, biopsychological, cognitive and social) explanations for the causes of psychological conditions and developmental disorders, describing and evaluating their potential impact on children’s lives and education
- outline and critically evaluate current psychological thinking on the impact of adverse experiences on children’s lives and education
- recognise research methods that might be appropriate to the study of this area of psychology (identifying strengths and weaknesses of core methodologies)
- understand the importance of culturally sensitive and ethical approaches to working and researching with children and adolescents.
