Module description

This module opens up new and alternative avenues for practising law in pursuit of social change, highlighting that litigation is just one of many paths available to you after completing your studies. The module introduces you to an array of ways, from policy advocacy to mediation, where you can use law to bring about social change.

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will:

  • have been introduced to the relationship between democracy, law and social change
  • have knowledge of issues that require social change and the ways in which these can be achieved
  • understand the processes involved in creating legal strategies for social change
  • have critical analytical skills appropriate to legal research
  • be able to communicate clearly the relevant laws relating to respective social issues, as well as their social, political and moral effects
  • demonstrate advocacy skills
  • be able to critically reflect on the limits and possibilities of the various ways in which social change can be achieved.
