Module description

In this module you will learn to describe a wide range of public health/health promotion intervention approaches and think critically about how to develop, deliver and evaluate public health interventions that can have impact on population health.

Indicative syllabus

  • Intervention categories: discussion of different approaches that empower people to make their own choices versus those that direct or restrict behaviour; comparing individual-focused interventions with structural interventions
  • Intervention categories: environmental, settings-based and community development interventions; income transfer and other economic interventions such as financial support or incentives; regulation and legislation interventions
  • Intervention descriptions and mechanisms of behaviour change
  • Community engagement and involvement in intervention development (marginalisation, activism, advocacy, co-production)
  • Needs assessment and evidence synthesis to inform intervention development and/or adapt or scale up existing interventions
  • Delivery of public health interventions including project management techniques, governance, cultural competence and community collaboration
  • Evaluation and monitoring techniques including develop intervention theories of change, including how an intervention is expected to lead to outcomes, and logic models such as a visual plan linking activities to outcomes

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • think critically about describing and categorising a wide range of potential public health interventions
  • think critically about the roles of community engagement and involvement, health needs assessment, synthesising evidence and assessing how these inform development of effective public health interventions
  • understand the value of project management, governance and cultural competence in designing and delivering public health interventions
  • think critically about how to monitor, evaluate and refine public health interventions
  • understand how to develop intervention theories of change and logic models.
