MA Documentary Practices Final Project

  • Assessment: a 1500-word project proposal (10%), practice-based documentary output in journalism, creative writing, film, podcast or theatre/performance (70%) and a 4000-word reflective portfolio and critical analysis (20%)

Module description

In this module we support you in the envisioning, planning and creation of a documentary project in a discipline of your choice. You can choose between work in theatre, film, media, creative writing, journalism, photography or visual culture, and your project will be overseen by a specialist.

The module will begin with a preliminary meeting with the module convenor in Term 1 followed by a project proposal prep session in Term 2. Following the submission of your proposal, you will be allocated a supervisor who will serve as a consultant in the development of your project. In addition to up to three hours of one-to-one supervision in Term 3, you will also attend a series of six sessions constructed to support you in the research and development process and to build bridges between your postgraduate study and future employment.

Indicative syllabus

  • Term 1: introduction to your dissertation project
  • Term 2: project proposal preparation session
  • Term 3: five three-hour group sessions on project development and planning and up to three hours of one-to-one supervision

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • envision, plan and create a documentary project in the creative discipline of your choice
  • engage with a wide range of research methods, creative practices and theories for the study and making of theatre and performance
  • demonstrate skills in the management, planning, organisation and presentation of projects
  • document and critically reflect on creative processes, practices and outcomes.
