Module description

In this module you will gain an understanding of the ethical, organisational and social context in which counsellors work. Together with the module Psychodynamic Thinking and Practice, this module offers the equivalent of a graduate certificate in counselling.

Indicative syllabus

  • Psychodynamic and systemic concepts and models for understanding organisational and group dynamics
  • Basic elements of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy Ethical Framework
  • Basic psychosocial concepts for understanding race, culture, gender, power, class and other dimensions of social identity
  • Having the experience of being in a group, taking up roles, reflecting on the dynamics of the group in the moment

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • describe the basic elements of an ethical framework for professional practice, and begin to apply them to psychodynamic counselling practice
  • evaluate the basic elements of a psychodynamic understanding of organisational dynamics, and begin to apply them to psychodynamic counselling practice
  • demonstrate your understanding of the key elements of a psychodynamic and systemically informed understanding of working with difference
  • demonstrate the capacity to reflect on the experience of working in a group, and the roles you take up, using psychodynamic and systemic principles.
