Module description

The criminology research project represents the culmination of your criminology knowledge and skills developed throughout the course and gives you key transferable skills.

  • Introduction
  • Writing a research question
  • Writing your research proposal
  • Study skills session: ‘doing’ a research project
  • Managing and delivering an independent project working with your supervisor, developing your project structure and timeline
  • Librarian session on searching the literature/utilising sources
  • Synthesising the literature/sources, reviewing and evaluating sources; writing a literature review
  • Writing up a research project
  • Writing retreat/’shut up and write’

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • understand what criminological research is and the materials and techniques relevant to its application
  • understand and critically analyse key thinkers and debates relevant to your project
  • understand and critically analyse theoretical and methodological frameworks relevant to your project
  • draw on a range of literatures, documents and platforms relevant to your project; examples include academic texts, ‘grey literature’ and digital content
  • understand ethical issues and concerns relating to your project and follow relevant guidelines.
