Module description
If you choose the research pathway for the Graduate Certificate in History, you will submit a dissertation of 8000 words (including footnotes, but excluding the bibliography and appendices) on a topic of your choice, developed in consultation with an appropriate supervisor.
Your own research lies at the heart of your dissertation. It is not simply a long essay, it is a structured piece of analysis that aims to make a modest new contribution to historical knowledge and debate. The dissertation shows that, at the end of your award, you have the capacity to think and work independently, and to undertake historical research.
Learning objectives
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- conduct extended independent research with the guidance of a supervisor
- present independent research as a substantial piece of written work, with full referencing.
