Birkbeck Faculty of Science Science Week

Birkbeck Science Week shares our world leading research with a wider audience

Science Week

Each year Birkbeck organises a week of free public lectures and related events in the form of Science Week to share internationally recognised research in the areas of science. The Faculty of Science encompasses three schools: Psychological Sciences, Natural Sciences and Computing and Mathematical Sciences. These events are for anyone interested in science and those who are considering studying science at university. These free science talks can be attended in-person at Birkbeck or attendees can join our global online audience.

Over three nights in June 2026, the faculty will host engaging and interactive evening events. Audiences will explore surprising mathematical objects, Space-Filling Curves, discover Interactions at Microscopic Scales and enjoy a conversation with Matthew Longo, Birbeck’s Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience, about his new book The Invisible Hand: Neurocognitive Mechanisms of Human Hand Function.

As well as celebrating the exciting work done by research staff, Science Week will see the awarding of three Science PhD prizes to exceptional early career researchers from each School. Audiences will gain insight into each prize winner’s work on the same evening that showcases their School’s research. Each evening will also see posterboard exhibitions and lab tours. Social receptions following each evening’s events will allow attendees to meet the speakers and prize winners, as well as current faculty staff and students.

2026 programme

  • Monday 15 June, 6-8pm: School of Natural Sciences presents Interactions at Microscopic Scales with Dr Keyron Hickman-Lewis and Dr Brian Ho.
  • Tuesday 16 June, 6-8pm: School of Psychological Sciences presents a conversation with Professor Matthew Longo to discuss the concept of the invisible hand and to show how it facilitates the extraordinary abilities of the human hand.
  • Thursday 18 June, 6-8pm: School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences presents Space-Filling Curves: From Surprising Geometry to Practical Uses in Computing by Dr David Weston.
